Gynecologist Q & A

Alliance for Women's Health Inc

What services does a gynecologist provide?

Many women only think of their gynecologist as the doctor who performs their well-woman exams, and perhaps as a resource for birth control. In reality, your gynecologist is there to meet a wealth of needs.

In addition to routine wellness checks, your gynecologist is there to answer any questions that you may have concerning your reproductive system. Birth control is just one of the many primary services that a gynecologist provides.

Your gynecologist can assist with:

  • Screening and treatment for sexually transmitted disease
  • Fertility counseling and treatment
  • All aspects of pregnancy and childbirth
  • Conditions that impact the female reproductive system
  • Incontinence
  • Endometriosis
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Menopause
  • Pelvic Pain
  • Painful Periods
  • Painful Sex
  • Lower back pain
  • Abdominal pain

As a urogynecologist, Dr. Chung understands that the bladder, uterus, pelvis, and all the muscles related to the reproductive system are connected. As such, he realizes that symptoms in one portion of the gynecological or urological system indicate problems in another portion.

When should I take my daughter to see a gynecologist?

Bringing your daughter to her first gynecologist visit while she is in her early teenage years allows her to develop trust in her care provider, which is essential for future health and wellness.

The best time to bring your daughter to her first gynecological appointment is between the ages of 13 and 15 or when she has her first period. At that age, she may not need a pelvic exam, and the appointment proceeds in much the same way as a regular medical checkup.

Dr. Chung and Jackie Shriver discuss your daughter’s development and answers any questions that she has about her health. They also explain what to expect during future visits, including the steps involved in a pelvic exam.

What happens during a routine gynecological exam?

During your exam, Dr. Chung begins by speaking with you about your health history and asking if you have any particular questions or concerns. The conversation is guided by where you are in your life and the challenges you are facing at that time.

Next, Dr. Chung or Jackie performs a thorough exam. Here’s what to expect:

  • Assessment of your vital signs
  • External palpation of your abdomen
  • Breast examination
  • Pelvic exam and Pap smear
  • Blood or urine sample, as needed
  • Additional screening, if necessary

If you’re experiencing gynecological symptoms or pain of any kind -- including lower back pain -- it’s time to discuss the details with Dr. Chung. A customized treatment plan is available for every concern.
